Ashington

The term 'pit village' or 'mining village' – commonly used to refer to places in all British coalfields – is somewhat misleading, and if modified by the adjective 'small' (as in this question) it's even more so. Ashington is better described as a small town; in 2011 it had a population of 27,764. That's slightly bigger than Congleton, and a little over half the size of Macclesfield.
